Earlier this Fall, we hosted paper artist and artist fellow, Sara Kim, at Postcard Cabins Big Bear outside of Los Angeles so she could disconnect from the noise and reconnect to nature. During her stay she craft this gorgeous paper art of her cabin. Read on to hear more about her stay, her creative process, and her connection to nature.
My name is Sara Kim and I am the artist behind HandmadeBySaraKim. I started my business in the wedding industry offering fabric flower headpieces, sashes, and veils with a service in customized wedding backdrops with paper flowers. It wasn’t until after I got married, I decided to concentrate only on paper art and specialize in creating content around it. I now have tutorials and design templates around paper arts and crafts, specifically for flowers and plants along with art vlogs on my Youtube Channel.
I specialize in paper flowers so I have to understand and connect with nature in a very deep level of detail. I do a lot of research and study patterns in nature and things that don’t have pattern, like a very organic flow of nature because some flowers, leaves, plants, trees have pattern that almost looks perfect and some are very wild and whimsical. These details may not be something an average person would think about but since my art is to mimic nature, I’m constantly looking for these patterns in nature. Nature influences me personally because I was so intrigued by patterns since I was a kid. I also just love flowers, they just make me smile.
We loved our stay. It was the perfect time to visit because the leaves were just browning but not too cold yet. Those are probably my favorite color palette and helped with even color study. During my free time, we just stared at our view. Something about untouched nature with no city view or power lines gives you this rest that feels different. It helped process some busy thoughts and a moment to admire nature which brought me closer to it, very different from just scrolling through images of flowers and trees on the internet.
