Shilletha Curtis’ Summer Guide To Postcard Cabins Western Catskills

We invited Shilletha Curtis, aka @i_am_dragonsky, to Postcard Cabins Western Catskills, outside New York City, to disconnect and explore the vast nature of the Hudson Valley. Here’s what she found on her escape to nature.

Deep in the mountains, nestled in the woods lies a serene escape known as Postcard Cabins. Each quaint cabin is loaded with everything to meet your needs. We’re talking a refrigerator, two burner stove, flushing toilet, shower, running water and all the utensils needed to cook. A bed with crisp white sheets, fluffy pillows as well as air conditioning make this escape in nature feel more luxurious than most. Postcard Cabins caters to the needs of those truly looking to getaway without having to sacrifice time and energy packing your own amenities. I enjoyed having a morning and evening fire each day. Every cabin has its own private fire pit, and firewood is provided (for a small fee).

Just a two-hour drive from Phillipsburg, New Jersey, the trip to Postcard Cabins Western Catskills, in Roscoe, NY was well worth it. What truly sets Postcard Cabins apart is how close everything is—hiking trails, charming small towns, fishing lakes, and local restaurants are all within easy reach. During my stay, I visited two standout spots: Roscoe Beer Co. and Buck Brook Alpacas, both just 20 minutes from the cabin.

Roscoe Beer Co., once rated the best brewery in New York, offered a wide selection of fun, flavorful beers on draft. It’s the perfect place for adults looking to unwind. The bartender was exceptionally friendly and even offered to snap as many photos as I wanted. Outside, there’s a cozy seating area surrounded by mountains, with a stage that hosts live music weekly during the summer. Right across the street, you’ll find the world-famous Roscoe Diner—a perfect stop to fuel up before or after your visit to the brewery.

After enjoying a refreshing drink, I made my way to my favorite local stop: Buck Brook Alpacas. There’s something incredibly endearing—and oddly thrilling—about being up close with alpacas. Not only are they adorable, but they’re also gentle, curious creatures who are more than happy to eat right out of your hand. The farm is home to over a hundred alpacas in a variety of colors and ages, from tiny calves to full-grown adults. For just ten dollars, it’s a fun and affordable outing for families, couples, or solo travelers of all ages. For an additional ten dollars, you can even take an alpaca for a walk—an experience I regret not doing to this day. While the alpacas steal the spotlight, the farm is also home to ducks, goats, sheep, llamas, and even peacocks, making it a delightful visit for any animal lover.

Whether you’re sipping local brews and listening to live music, feeding alpacas on a peaceful farm, or simply unwinding in a cozy cabin surrounded by nature, Postcard Cabins offers the perfect balance of adventure and relaxation. It’s a reminder that you don’t have to travel far to disconnect from the noise and reconnect with yourself—and maybe even a few friendly alpacas along the way.
