Rita and I met a little more than four years ago while we attended college at Georgia State
University. I actually found her via a dating app, but when I saw that she wasn’t active on her
account, I was able to reach out to her on Instagram. Initially, we were friends, where I was
studying film, she happened to be pursuing an acting career. Our first encounter was actually a
day where she needed me to film her audition tape for her, after her previous plans with
someone else fell through. I remember it was one of the first times I could remember not being
nervous before hanging out with someone. We spent most of the time laughing throughout the
whole thing, but with a smile like hers, I really couldn’t help but crack a joke at every opportunity
that was given to me. After we edited and sent out the final video, we continued to stay in touch
and got to know each other on a more personal level. It was so refreshing meeting someone
who couldn’t have been more different from me, yet I still couldn’t seem to get enough of her. A
week or so passed before she got the email that she wasn’t going to be chosen for the part. It
was a little disappointing because I knew how much she wanted it, but there was always a silver
lining. She always said that even though she may not have won the part in the film, she still won
me instead.
We are very big on spending time together. And we feel that our relationship thrives more when
we really set our minds out to plan certain dates and trips that we want to do. One of the things
at the top of our list was to get a cabin out in the woods/mountains. Rita is very very big on
nature, and I love the quiet that it provides, so when we came across Getaway, and saw how
cost effective and original it was compared to other places, we jumped at the first chance we
got. It was such an incredible experience, and I’m glad that we were able to fully enjoy the
experience as individuals and as a couple. As I said, Rita loves nature, so the Getaway was
literally right up her alley. The trails in the woods and the wildlife that we saw, really fulfilled
Rita’s love for Mother Nature without it being too overwhelming. And I personally loved waking
up and going to sleep to the quietness. Whether it was the early birds chirping or the brisk
motion of the wind at night over a cackling fire, I found my myself in a comforting state of mind
that I hadn’t felt in quite some time.
The disconnect and being away from the city was honestly so much better than we could have
ever imagined. We really weren’t sure how we would take having little to no access to our
phones, but Getaway really does an amazing job of allowing it’s visitors to take in the
experience. There’s so much to offer between the falls, the trails and the nature that you kind of
just forget about everything else for a little while.
Of course, with Rita’s love for nature, we spent most of our time outdoors, just taking in
everything there is to offer. We would walk the closest trail every morning as a way to sort of
start our day. Then we would come back and freshen up, followed by some of the amazing
complimentary coffee that Getaway provided us upon our arrival. The rest of our day consisted
of card games, resting and just taking the opportunity to talk to each other. I think the best part
of the whole experience was how much we got to better know each other. You’d think that after
a few years, you’d know everything there is to know about your partner, but Getaway exposed some of the best qualities we had yet to discover about ourselves. We would end the night with some s’mores and roasted marshmallows over a cozy fire under the stars.
We really do encourage other couples to take advantage of an opportunity as peaceful and as
intimate as Getaway. The best advice we can give is to take some pictures together. It’ll be easy
to lose track of time with everything else, and you will both be satisfied and impressed with all
the memories that’ll be great to look back on later. We also highly recommend meals that can
quickly be made, as you’ll see that the kitchen is as limited as Getaway advertises it to be. Pack
light, bring some of your favorite games or a book you’ve been meaning to read, and prepare for
an experience unlike any other, away from the city and with your significant other.
