Meet Addison, the man behind our tiny cabins

Scattered along Maine’s rugged coastline are some 4,600 islands. One in particular stands out to Addison Godine.

Getaway’s Director of Construction grew up summering on Bremen Long Island without electricity, infrastructure or ferry access. Addison first visited at two month’s old and it’s been an August family tradition ever since.

“Being there got me interested in doing more with less and living simply,” he says.

Once prized for shipbuilding-quality timber, the island today offers isolated recreation in warmer weather. Addison singles out the feeling of empowerment that comes with surviving independently and off the grid.

“I remember, as a kid, fixing things with my hands, which is always something you have to do there,” Addison says. “There’s this quality of being intimate with the environment that you don’t get living in the city.”

The Milton, Massachusetts native has always been at home in New England. Addison graduated from Middlebury College in Vermont with a degree in architecture and a physics minor.

His undergraduate studies led to a unique opportunity with Getaway.

“Whereas most architects design each building differently, I get to iterate. I learn from previous designs and carry what works into the next house. It’s more like product design than architecture.”

Addison’s design sense is influenced from trips along the Maine coast in sailboats with cabins about 80 square feet.

“Boat interiors are extremely efficient. I think about them as I’m designing the tiny houses. Everything has its place in a sailboat, contained and tidy. There’s a term for it — shipshape. I’d like to think that our tiny house designs are shipshape, too.”

Design also runs in the family. His late maternal grandfather Alvin taught graphic design at Yale and designed homes on Martha’s Vineyard. In the Getaway tradition of naming its tiny homes after staff grandparents, Addison-designed cabins Alvin and Hope stand near DC and NYC, respectively.

Addison also helped build Getaway’s first three tiny houses in the summer of 2015. At the time he was unsure what would become of them. Would people actually pay to sleep in his creations, or would all this work amount to nothing?

“I remember that moment distinctly,” Addison recalls of the first guest booking. “It was the validation of the business idea that you’re onto something that could be bigger.”

After building those initial cabins outside Boston, Addison pursued other projects before returning to Getaway in March 2017 as Director of Construction, to design cabins and manage work on-site.

In keeping with the intimacy of sailboats and tiny houses, Addison’s construction vehicle is a Toyota Prius.

“I keep all of my tools in the back. When other contractors see my car they are intimidated and fear me,” he laughs.

As Getaway expands, Addison plans to be on the road more and is trying to pick up the guitar. He already plays piano, but a guitar is far easier to fit in a hatchback.

Tips to Get the Most Out of Your Getaway in the Winter

Tina and her girlfriend are both nurses in Philadelphia. Their now one-year-old chocolate lab pup, Macon, has all the energy in the world—so they’re frequently looking for outdoor adventures to do around the city. They decided to try out a winter Getaway at our Boston outpost. Here’s what she had to say about their experience:

When a friend told me I NEED to check out Getaway house, after minimal research, I couldn’t think of anything more perfect to get us out of the city and all spending quality time together—and the dog can join us too!?

We love to camp, and we were disappointed when the seasons started to change; it was December, and we hadn’t taken our new pup (now two months old) on a camping trip. That was when I started finally looking into setting a date. Unsure if wintertime tiny cabin-ing was a good idea, we decided, why not check it out and make a two-day trip out of it (driving through a northeastern snowstorm on the way there, because we were not about to miss out on our stay) to get up to the Boston Outpost.

Not only was it a snowstorm, but it was negative degrees outside without windchill, and I can’t say enough about how perfectly cozy and comfortable it was inside. Camping minus the cold, and with the addition of an unbelievably comfortable bed to sleep on: amazing. We were so surprised to see treats for Macon that occupied her for the whole night. There was even space for her portable crate to set up, which we ended up not needing. In the morning, I was determined to make breakfast over the fire, and despite a ton of snow, the pit, and the path to the pit were clear, with all the supplies I needed in the outside bin for a tiny fee.

It was perfect, and the best recharge, any time of year. I wish we could’ve stayed two more nights at least. Here’s what I will be more intentional about for our next visit:

  • Go into the city and use the recommendations of places and local stores to visit; purchase your groceries, beverages, and supplies locally.
  • Go on the local hikes recommended by Getaway.
  • Make a meal over the fire; no matter the time of year.
  • Make a meal over the stove and get creative, it is fun to use the quaint space and supplies.
  • USE THE PHONE LOCKBOX; we all need a break from those things.
  • Journal, read the books, do the activities, sit in silence, and ask questions you’ve been wanting to ask but haven’t had the ‘time’ for.

I think we found our new anniversary celebration spot, winter and all. We forget sometimes in these cold-weather areas of the country what we can go do. Change the pace, scenery, routine, and slow it down.

Getaway Partners: Going OFFLINE with MATE the Label

At Getaway, we believe in disconnecting from our busy lives and reconnecting with what’s important to us. We’re happy to partner with Los Angeles-based sustainable fashion brand, MATE the label, to promote our passions for getting offline together.

We caught up with MATE founder Kayti O’Connell Carr to talk about the company, what it stands for, and the Offline t-shirt we’ve grown to love so much.

When and how did MATE the Label start?

I founded MATE The Label in 2013. MATE was born out of my love for vintage clothing, visual storytelling, and a need to create something for myself. I started the company by selling vintage t-shirts with no intention of creating my own line, however, it was a natural progression. MATE has been committed to offering locally-made, vintage-inspired tees, and other broken-in basics since its beginnings, but in 2018 it evolved into an environmentally friendly label.

What is the mission of MATE the Label’s distinct point of view?

MATE’s Dress Clean initiative is what truly guides the brand’s ethos and vision. We have always been domestically developed and produced; within a 5-mile range of our HQ. Transparency, ethical manufacturing, and environmental impact have always been important to me; but there is also another component that I think is missing from fashion’s ‘sustainability’ consciousness. That is, fashion’s impact on the individual in regards to health. The consumer understands the importance of organic foods, clean beauty products, but what about the clothing that you wear everyday? We have committed to using natural GOTS certified organic fabrics and have removed all synthetics from the line. We are also using low-impact dyes. Things like pesticides, endocrine disruptors, and carcinogens are rampant in the industry and I hope to offer the cleanest product possible to our customers. We like to think of our product as skincare for your closet.

Mate the Label Getaway

How do you disconnect?

I disconnect by meditating at home every morning or attending guided meditations at the DEN Meditation studio in Los Angeles.

Tell us about the Offline tees.

Going “offline” is so important, I put it on a t-shirt as a reminder. I think it can be very challenging to unplug and truly disconnect. I find myself having a difficult time, even when I am on vacation to not be tempted to answer emails and continually think about work. The tees are made in our best-selling Alex Crew shape – which is flattering on all body types. What I love the most about this tee is it can be worn over and over again and is made out of 100% GOTS certified Organic Cotton.

Where’s your favorite place to get away?

One of my favorite places to escape to is Big Sur, California. There’s something almost mythical about its rugged and mountainous terrain. I love the seaside cliffs, misty coastlines, winding turns, and redwood forests. It has extremely limited cell phone reception which makes it the perfect place to just get away from it all.

If you want to know more about MATE the Label, you can follow them @mate_the_label or visit their website.

This week we’re launching a promotion where the first 200 people to use code MATETHELABEL when booking a Getaway will receive a promo code for a free MATE the Label Offline tee and $10 off of a Getaway booking. Terms and Conditions apply.

Terms and Conditions:

Offer cannot be retroactively applied and can be used towards any future booking, as long as you book before March 1, 2019 at 11:59pm EST. You will be emailed within 48 hours of booking with your code for a free OFFLINE tee. Quantity and sizing for OFFLINE tee is limited. T-shirts will be fulfilled by MATE the Label and are dependent on inventory availability. All questions regarding order fulfillment can be directed to [email protected].

Nominate a Friend: Meet Joshua

Over the summer, we launched a new initiative at Getaway, simply entitled Nominate a Friend, inspired by feedback from our guests.

Notes from guests like Kayla at Getaway Mount Adams, who said, “this is the most relaxing, rejuvenating, thoughtful one night escape I’ve ever been on. This is exactly what we needed and plan to do it again and again.”

We started Nominate a Friend to give people the opportunity to nominate someone they know who may not have the means or may not even be thinking to take the time themselves, and give them an overnight escape to nature to do just that – recharge in the great outdoors.

Last month, we sent Joshua on a Getaway. He was nominated by a member in his community because Joshua spends countless hours working every year on a summer camp for kids in his inner-city community in Pittsburgh. The 8-week camp has around 200 kids and 60 interns staffed, and Joshua manages all of them. Between dedicating time to his community and studies, Joshua doesn’t always have time to spend on himself or with his wife.

nominate a friend

Motivated by the changes he’s helped build in his community, alongside his passion and faith, Joshua has become a fixture in his neighborhood, from tutoring in-school, to opening his door at home to any kids who want to come by.

With his nomination, Joshua made an escape with his wife to Getaway Beaver Creek in celebration of his anniversary. They took advantage of time by the campfire and even made his wife’s very first moon pie. To put it in his words, it was simply a “beautiful time to get away from everything.”

If you’d like to Nominate a Friend, you can learn more about our program here.

Campfire Cooking

Campfire Cooking: Appetite for Apples

Fall is the perfect season to go apple-picking on the way to your escape.

Our favorite part: you get to take your pickings back to your cabin and make some tasty treats. Cook any or all of these three recipes that bring the oh-so-good tastes of apple crumble, hot apple cider, and tasty apple pancakes to your Getaway.

Warm Apple Cobbler Packet

Every Getaway cabin has a fire pit with grilling grate, and tin foil so you can cook without having to bring any extra supplies. For this recipe, all you’ll need are your freshly picked apples, a little brown sugar, butter, and cinnamon. Bonus points if you’d like to add any nuts or nutmeg to your meal.

  • Slice apples thinly.
  • Grab a long sheet of foil (roughly from your fingers to your elbow).
  • Place the apples in the foil, with a spoonful of butter, a sprinkling of cinnamon, and a healthy serving of sugar. Lastly, sprinkle the nuts on top if you’d like them.
  • Wrap packet securely, but leave a little room for it to puff up over the campfire.
  • Light your campfire and place your packet on the grilling grate. Cook for 5-15 minutes, depending on the intensity of your flame.
  • Remove from heat, unpack, and eat.

If you’d like to add a crumble to the top, you can use the same recipe, but mix together brown sugar, a touch of flower, some rolled oats, and baking powder, and place it over your apples to give it a little crisp as it cooks. Top with whipped cream, if desired. You can also take one of those delicious, warm, soft apples and add it to your s’more for texture and flavor.

hot apple cider

Hot Apple Cider

You’ll need apple juice, a fresh apple, cinnamon sticks, cloves, and a fire-safe pot for this tasty mixture. If you’d like to add a little something extra for the 21+ crowd, throw a splash of bourbon into your cup.

  • Pour a few cups of apple juice into your pot.
  • Add in cinnamon and cloves to taste.
  • Cook over the open flame, or on your stove inside your cabin for about 10 minutes.
  • Remove from heat and enjoy.

Apple Pancakes

You’ll need a cast iron griddle or skillet, and your favorite pancake mix, plus a few apples and cinnamon. You can also make your own pancake mix with a couple of cups of all-purpose flour, a heap of sugar, salt (which we have in your cabin), a sprinkle of baking soda and baking powder, buttermilk, eggs, and butter – plus maple syrup to pour on top.

  • Prepare your fire first and make sure your cast iron is hot and prepped (either with butter or with oil).
  • Thinly slice 1-2 apples. Combine in a bowl with a touch of sugar, cinnamon, and butter.
  • Combine the rest of your ingredients and add the apple mixture last.
  • Scoop out ladle of batter and place on your hot pan. When it starts bubbling, it’s time to flip to the other side.
  • Flip to your pancake is ready. Top with maple syrup and dig in.
