We reached out to Alexa Meisler of Travel in Missouri to get some Getaway tips from her escapes to Getaway St. Francois, Getaway Ozark Highlands, and her camping adventures around Missouri. She pulled together a list of games and activities for kids and adults to enjoy at Getaway. Here’s what she had to say.
It’s the little things that can take a good camping trip and turn it into an unforgettable one. While roasting marshmallows and telling ghost stories around the campfire is a classic camping activity, it’s always fun to mix things up and try something new.
When planning your camping activities, consider adding a few unique options to the mix. With a little bit of imagination, you can create a camping experience with a few fun twists. So, if you’re planning a camping trip soon, don’t forget to plan some fun activities and pack a few games.
Activities & Game for Families:
Fun games and camping activities not only offer a way to pass the time while enjoying the great outdoors but also provide an opportunity for families to bond and create lasting memories. Create your own camping traditions with specific games or activities the kids will look forward to each year.
Scavenger Hunt: A scavenger hunt is a fun way to keep kids entertained while also exploring the campsite. Create a list of items for them to find, such as pinecones, animal tracks, and flowers. Be sure to offer a prize for the first one to find everything on the list.
Here’s a tip: choose a prize that can be enjoyed by the whole group such as a card or board game.
Storytelling Circle: Sitting around the campfire telling stories is a time-honored camping tradition. Take turns telling stories, or have one person start a story and have each person add to it as it goes around the circle. This can be a great way to encourage creativity and bonding and usually a lot of silliness!
DIY Craft Projects: Bring along some craft supplies, like beads, yarn, or fabric, and spend some time at the campfire or picnic table getting creative. This could be a friendship bracelet, a necklace or piece of art. It’s a great way to create your own camping memento!
Activities & Games for Adults:
Whether you’re aiming to bond with your fellow campers, create lasting memories, or be the camping hero who brings pre-planned activities to the trip, there are plenty of fun options available.
Play Two Truths and a Lie: The game is simple: each person takes a turn telling the group three statements about themselves, two of which are true and one of which is a lie. The rest of the group must then guess which statement is the lie.
You can add a camping themed version. For example, players can include statements related to camping, such as “I have climbed a mountain while camping,” or “I have slept in a tent during a thunderstorm.”
Who Am I?: This game requires nothing more than a pack of sticky notes, a pen and some creativity. To play, simply write the name of a person, real or fictional, on a sticky note and place it on someone’s back or forehead.
The player must then ask questions to figure out who they are. Questions can be as simple or as complex as the player wants, but they must be yes or no questions only.
Night Frisbee: Looking for a fun and unique way to spend an evening while camping? Why not try playing Night Frisbee? This classic game of catch is taken to a whole new level when played with a glow-in-the-dark frisbee.
